Red Meat and Fizzy Drinks
Research has again concluded that red meat and fizzy drinks increase the risks of heart disease. Unprocessed red meat can raise the risks as much as 13%.
Add th that just one can of a sugar sweetened fizzy drink each day can increase the risk of heart disease in men by over 20%. Both of these figures are not to be laughed at. That is a lot of time lost in your life.
A study in the US over the last 2 decades by health experts through observing tens of thousands of people has enabled them to produce two reports on the effects of their diets.
When added together the findings show dark clouds of the morning after effect of curing a hangover by consuming a bacon sandwich and a fizzy drink. In the UK this is not even after a hangover. Thousands of people consume bacon sandwiches on a daily basis, and millions consume at least one can of coke a day as part of their routine. Fizzy drinks are a way of life in the UK.
The findings which have come from Harvard School of Public Health have shown that just by halving the consumption of red meat could have prevented 9.3% of male deaths and 7.6% of female deaths in their investigation. They sate clearly that regular consumption of red meat, and especially processed meat will contribute substantially to premature death.
The suggestion OS to change red meat with fish, poultry or plant based proteins which could lead to a 14% improvement in life. This study also strengthened the evidence of a link of a link between chronic disease and red meat.
Others suggest different and still argue that red meat is an essential source of nutrients such as iron, zinc and vitamin D. Obviously the British Soft Drink Association have also had their say and claim that this study does not show any risk of heart disease, and neither does any other.
Protein is required for good health and should always be part of your diet. Whether you get it from fish or meat, is your choice. Sugar based drinks are on a sticky wicket. They are a good source of quick energy if you are in the middle of a long distance sporting event and need a quick fix, but in excess cannot be good for you in the long run and can only assist in putting weight onto the frame and rotting the teeth.
